Paul Albert (Wa-sei-si-she) and wife, Annie Albert (Pah-she-he) circa 1904. Albert was a Osage Tribal member born in 1871 and died in 1926. Albert attended Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and later relocated to Pawhuska where tribal records show him as a farmer and working for the tribe. The badge shown below is believed to be circa 1900-1910 and thought to be a neckerchief holder, being it has a loop on the reverse instead of pin. It is obviously hand stamped, not made by a badge company. It was not uncommon during the time period this badge was created to where the spelling may have been incorrect. My research has not determined if Albert was a member of law enforcement and used this badge in that capacity or if it was simply a piece of adornment. I have found other photos where Osage members wore badges as neckerchief holders. The below photograph is an example of that practice.
